Pendule au “Portefaix“. - Lot 507
Pendule au “Portefaix“. Based on a model by Jean-André Reiche (1752-1817), received as a master founder in 1785, inspired by the novel "Paul et Virginie" by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, whose drawing was registered in January 1808 in Paris. It depicts a young African wearer with glass eyes, leaning on a cane, loaded with a bundle in which is inscribed the movement with the dial bearing the signature of the watchmaker Gaston Jolly (active in Paris, rue Pavée-Saint-Sauveur, circa 1810). Oval terrace animated by a monkey in branches. Bronze with a black patina, gilded in both golds. Condition: Very good. With key and pendulum. Dimensions : 37 x 27 x 11 cm. Provenance : Collection of Baron and Baroness François Duesberg. Litt. : Reproduced page 67 in "Musée François Duesberg", page 343 in Pierre Kjellberg "La Pendule française" and page 172 in Tardy "La Pendule française", volume II.
